Sports Massage
A targeted treatment for athletes and active professionals — combines deep tissue, stretching and trigger-point work to support recovery, prevent injury and improve performance.
- Faster recovery
- Injury prevention
- Improved mobility
- Reduced muscle soreness
What the sports massage actually is
Sports massage is recovery and performance work for bodies that train. It blends deep tissue technique, trigger-point release, and assisted stretching, applied specifically to the muscle groups your sport loads — calves and hamstrings for runners, hips and quads for cyclists, shoulders and lats for swimmers and gym lifters.
It is not a generic massage delivered faster. The therapist asks what you do, how much of it, what is grumbling and what is coming up in your calendar, then builds the session around that.
Who it suits best
- Runners training for a race
- Gym, CrossFit and football regulars
- Cyclists and swimmers with repetitive load patterns
- Anyone managing a niggle that keeps coming back
- Active professionals who train early and sit all day
Benefits you can expect
Faster recovery between sessions
Working through fatigued tissue reduces the flat, heavy feeling that follows hard blocks of training.
Fewer recurring niggles
Releasing the overworked side of a pattern — tight hip flexors, locked calves — takes load off the joint that keeps complaining.
Better range of motion
Freer hips, ankles and shoulders let you move efficiently instead of compensating around a restriction.
Race-day readiness
A lighter flush two or three days out keeps you loose without leaving you sore for the start line.
What to expect in the room
- 1A short intake: sport, weekly volume, current niggles, and any event dates.
- 2Broad warming work over the target region before anything deep begins.
- 3Focused deep tissue and trigger-point work where the load has concentrated.
- 4Assisted stretching to restore range through the areas just released.
- 5A note at the end on what to do — and what to avoid — over the next 48 hours.
How we set the pressure
Firm and specific, but never brutal. Trigger-point work can be briefly intense; it should stay at a level you can breathe through, and it eases the moment you say so. Depth is dropped automatically if you have a session or race within 48 hours.
Aftercare
- Keep training light for 24 hours after deeper work.
- Hydrate well and eat properly — recovery is fuelled, not just rubbed in.
- Repeat the stretches your therapist showed you two or three times during the week.
- Book maintenance every two to four weeks during a training block rather than only when something hurts.
Booking this in Westlands
We see a steady stream of Westlands runners training on the Karura Forest trails and around Riverside, plus gym members from the clubs along Waiyaki Way. Early morning and late evening slots exist precisely so a session can sit either side of training rather than in the middle of your working day.
Often booked alongside deep tissue massage, thai massage and foot massage. You can also see the full massage menu or our spa packages.
